In order
to develop trained manpower in the emerging areas of Biotechnology and Genetic
Engineering Research, Department of Biotechnology and University Grants
Commission started M.Sc. Biotechnology teaching programmes during the year,
1985. Our University was one among the first five institutions selected for
offering this course. For this programme, the students are selected from an All
India Entrance Test conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and a
fellowship of Rs.800/- per month is being paid by Department of Biotechnology,
New Delhi, to the admitted candidates. This programme is being run by highly
trained faculty members, research associates and administrative staff. Apart
from many sophisticated equipments, the M.Sc. Programme also has many modern
laboratory facilities. The M.Sc. Biotechnology Programme of Madurai Kamaraj
University was adjudged as one of the best teaching programmes in the country
by Dr.Kumar's committee which reviewed the M.Sc. Biotechnology Teaching
Programmes of various Universities.
A total of 378 students, selected on an all India basis, have undergone the
above course till 2005. The geographical distribution of students and their
placement details are provided.

The syllabus, which
was first drafted in 1985 during the inception of the course, has been revised
in four subsequent Board of Studies Meetings held in 1988, 1991, 1995 and 1998.
